Another thing we’ve had on the family bucket list is bird banding, which we finally checked off this week. We got one of the last spots at Audobon + showed up at 7:30am with grandma in tow. The lecture portion covered how + why they band birds. The kids each got to release a bird + then we stayed a bit, making the trek around to check the bird nets.

Our family effort has been more outdoor time, together or not. On this week’s plan, we penciled in outdoor time for every day of the week. It must’ve helped because we did it! At least 3 hours/day outside, daily (double on Monday as usual). It was the perfect week to go all out because we three greatly enjoy the rain, so much of our time was spent soaking in it.

We’re really flinging ourselves into this spring energy, with weekly snow setbacks, of course. Last week, we all went to a movie for the first time in… years? We couldn’t figure out what the last one we’d been to was, but it’s been a long time. Guess which one we saw?!?

We took Grandma to volunteer at the cat shelter for the first time, showing her around + what to do. We spent a couple of hours brushing, petting + playing. We also spent time attending Math Day at the Rockies stadium with lots of other homeschoolers (fun but hot), admiring our growing garden plants, trying Belgian snacks with the grandparents in our YumBox, + exploring Matthews/Winters without any leaves on the trees.

We made our first shopping voyage of spring by bicycle + it went swimmingly well. I’m hoping our legs will continually grow stronger with all this uphill toward destinations + we can venture out on more difficult trail rides later this year. For now, just grabbing our groceries + even getting to all the local parks using leg power is enough.

Highlight of our week was definitely the Arvada Fire + Rescue truck + their paramedic vehicle. A six-man crew visited our group, rolling up in an 86-ton, emergency truck on a cold, windy morning. We spent two hours learning about how the fire suits work, what types of jobs the Arvada crew is called to do + their corresponding certifications, how the firefighters get assigned their daily jobs, + what they do every day inside the firehouse. After the indoor portion, we all got a tour of the truck’s compartments. The kids’ favorite was definitely the “weapons” compartment with all the sharp axes, hatchets + car piercers. The team left us with some sirens + honks, leaving quite an impression.

What a fun week we had! Swimming + meals with cousins + grandparents. Wildlings celebrated Cat Day with much fanfare + lots of outdoor play. Three different playgrounds with friends this week, plus art + play at the house together = happy + sun-filled days.

Calm week spent outside as much as possible, barring Thursday. We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day twice – early with our Wildling crew and a leprechaun-fueled treasure hunt, then on the actual holiday with just family + Rosetta’s amazing 4-leaf clover cookies (not pictured). We learned a lot of Irish facts, history + lore, then polished up our limericks with Irish accents all around. We also learned to dance a basic jig. Our family ancestry runs to Ireland on both sides, so it’s exciting to learn more.

Everyone found an art focus this week – to my surprise! I’d picked up a set of encaustics at a garage sale recently, and a friend at Wildlings gave us a tutorial. So we set up the whole shabang on the kitchen floor + painted for several days, even once with friends. By the end, a huge brush-cleaning session that stunk up the whole house with chemicals, we each had 3-4 wooden canvases that we liked.
